People rally to support Haitian community in Springfield, OH

In Springfield, Ohio, a wave of racist disinformation and intimidation targeted the local Haitian community, fueled by Donald Trump, J.D. Vance, and far-right conspiracy theorists looking to exploit immigration fears for political gain. White supremacist groups, including the Proud Boys and the KKK, escalated these efforts with armed “patrols” and intimidation tactics, attempting to silence resistance and spread fear. Their strategy relied on dehumanization, falsely framing Haitian residents as an illegitimate presence in the town, while simultaneously denying any role in inciting political violence.

In response, residents of Springfield and allies across the country mobilized in solidarity. The Haitian community, along with other Springfield residents, organized a peace rally with messages like “Hate will not make us great” and “Immigrants are welcome here”, pushing back against the hate-fueled rhetoric. Local businesses and institutions saw an outpouring of support, reinforcing the message that Springfield belongs to all its residents. One woman took a satirical approach to supporting Haitian community members.

At the national level, the Haitian Bridge Alliance took legal action against Trump and Vance, seeking accountability for the harm caused. While these efforts have helped strengthen the community’s resolve and visibility, it will take time to see whether they have effectively curbed the ongoing threats and intimidation. Read about the legal action.
